Scott Thomas of Sea & Sage Audubon spoke to the Banning Ranch Conservancy about the Santa Ana River Mouth and neighboring beaches, where several threatened and endangered birds breed and spend much of the year. This area is one of the busiest coastal areas in the country for humans, while many species of birds rely on the nutrient rich Santa Ana River. Sea and Sage Audubon Society has been working for decades to help balance the needs of the birds with the public demand for recreation. After 25 years working to protect Banning Ranch, the Banning Ranch Conservancy, The Trust for Public Land, and Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority completed the acquisition of 387-acres forever protecting the land on December 16, 2022. This video includes Frank Randall, Assemblymember Cottie Petrie-Norris, and OC Supervisor Katrina Foley among other friends and supporters who send congrats to the Banning Ranch Conservancy for its role protecting the Randall Preserve as parkland for future generations.

Executive Director Melanie Schlotterbeck, Community Engagement Coordinator Paul Waggoner, and Board President Terry Welsh outline the next phase of work for Banning Ranch Conservancy. After an engaging Strategic Planning process revealed multiple internal and external goals, the Board took this to heart. These goals will now be the focus of the organization moving forward. The PEER Program was also announced which connects the community with restoration opportunities on the coastal lands and waters.
